Hum... It seems more complicated than I thought....

Let's forget about trying to handle the complete system as a 12.2 layout, and let's forget about trying to synchronize two 7.1 systems. To begin, having just two 7.1 systems and choosing to send the sound one the first or the second should be enought. With this setup, is it possible, for each 7.1 systems, to select on which speaker to send the sound ?
What panning algorithm are you using now? I know VBAP can be generalized to three dimensions pretty easily.
Never mind, I just found Christian's contribution e-mail again.
Since it's based on VBAP, I'm fairly confident that this can be generalized as well. I've seen VBAP used to drive a 24-speaker array before (8 up top, 8 at ear level, and 8 below).

I'm not even sure it can be emulated properly, without making sure the two cards' clocks are kept in sync (which typically requires a physical connection between them).
Thinking about this some more, even if you didn't have sample-accurate timing, I wouldn't think it would be too hard to detect and correct for drift, would it?
