[Openal] alcOpenDevice not working in Ubuntu

Hello,
      I have installed openal in ubuntu, but when I ran the code, alcOpenDevice returns NULL. There is no error code
returned alGetError() (returned 0). I debugged into alcOpenDevice and I find _alParseConfig() failing with Couldnt parse config file. Then rc_lookup( "devices" ); also returned null.

Can someone let me know what i m doing wrong. I m using GNU GCC in ubuntu.
