Never mind, I just found Christian's contribution e-mail again.

Since it's based on VBAP, I'm fairly confident that this can be 
generalized as well.  I've seen VBAP used to drive a 24-speaker array 
before (8 up top, 8 at ear level, and 8 below).

Thinking about this some more, even if you didn't have sample-accurate 
timing, I wouldn't think it would be too hard to detect and correct for 
drift, would it?
