On Vista the "Generic Hardware" is not available - so the "Generic
Software" device is being used, which apparently does work on Realtek
cards.

I tend to agree as the "Generic Hardware" is just using generic
DirectSound3D and EAX extensions (EAX 2.0 on the Realtek).

On the XP machine, try going to the Windows Control Panel -> Sound and
Audio Devices ->Audio Tab -> Make sure the Realtek is the Default Playback
Device and click on Advanced -> Performance Tab. There is a hardware
acceleration slider with 4 positions.

>From left to right these mean ...

(None) No DirectSound acceleration
DirectSound(2D) acceleration
DirectSound(2D + 3D) Acceleration
(Full) DirectSound(2D + 3D) acceleration and Property Set Extensions (e.g
EAX support)

Try lowering the slider one position at a time to see what needs to be
disabled to make things work. I know that there are issues with EAX 2.0
because the Realtek drivers only support half of the EAX 2.0 features.

Bottom line is that on Realtek you need to be using the "Generic Software"
device.

The fault is in Realtek's DSound driver, not OpenAL.

Maybe this has a newer driver than the XP machine ?

Look for an updated driver. If there isn't one, then complain to
Realtek.
