[Openal] Realtek HD playing sounds intermittently

I have a laptop running WinXP with a Realtek HD 883 chip installed. In
our app we were seeing some sounds not playing at all, and of those that
played, they would sometimes stop playing before reaching the end of the
sound. This behavior seems random as to which sounds will play and
which won't.

So next I tested it with the OpenAL sample apps and here's what I've
found. PlayMultiChannelWin32 works fine, PlayStreamWin32 works fine,
PlayStaticWin32 plays a sound about 1 out of 10 runs, EFXFilterWin32
plays the dry sound about half the time, all EFX affected sounds played
fine, EFXReverbWin32 played fine, XRAMDemoWin32 found no XRAM of course
and played correctly in software about half the time. I'm not really
sure what to make of all this, except that the sound problems in our app
aren't my fault J

This is all using the generic hardware driver, generic software works
fine.

I've got another laptop, same hardware, but running Vista and that works
fine.

Is there anything I can do to bring this hardware into compliance on XP
or does it just not support OpenAL fully?
