[Openal] detecting voice

Hello guys, i was trying to keep the microphone working and start capturing when somebody talked. i know we can get information about frequency,number of samples,etc but i dont know how to get the amplitude of the samples..
  I'm new in openal and i think it is dificult to get material for studying. how would i learn more about openal?
