I have to agree too. I prefer email/mailing lists. (Though I do have a
soft spot for NNTP, but that looks even more  less-up-to-date :) )

I subscribe two several dozen mailing lists so I have a hard time
keeping up as it is. Having to jump to a separate forum and deal with
extra logins/passwords is a big minus in my opinion. I also hate
dealing with those web UIs that support all those strange formating
things to get around HTML.

And more often than not, I find searching capabilities in forums (and
even mailing list archives) to be extremely lacking. I've found it
often easier to search my own email.
