[Openal] Performance testing

I'm attempting to compare idle cpu results between openal-si to openal-soft. More specifically, I want to compare 16-bit stereo with openal-si to 5.1 multi-channel with openal-soft. While I'm not comparing apples to apples here ; I am attempting to measure the difference in available cpu. Does anybody have any experience in this area ? Initially, I am comparing a stereo streaming audio setup between implementations, and I do see a noticeable difference (about 5% more expensive for openal-soft) ; however I believe this is my fault as I had configured alsa for multi-channel audio while playing stereo audio. Does anybody know if this would tend to make sense? I also see about the same increase when playing 5.1 multi-channel with multi-channel wave files. I guess I'm wondering if this is about the approximate cost for wanting to use multi-channel audio?

kernel 2.6.21
alsa audio driver
openal-si (dated feb 11, 2006)
openal-soft-1.4.272
libogg-1.1.3
libvorbis-1.1.2
