When would I ever want multiple sound contexts playing simultaneously?
I can't really imagine ever wanting that - it seems obscure. I suppose
possibly if you had e.g. some kind of sound portal engine going on,
you could manage the listeners for each of the portals so that they
were moved to the local space (like a graphics portal engine but in
sound). But this doesn't seem a crucial application, especially with
where the API is at now.

There's some headsets that have built in sound cards via usb. In games
you may want to do voice chat via the headset, but have sound come from
your speakers. For example LOTRO does a version of this.
