I wouldn't normally reply because I havn't really used OpenAL much.
But, since you seem to be keen to get moving... Just a quick sanity check for you....
It might be a dumb suggestion..
But could it be possible that you are modifying the wrong axis? i.e. The problem you describe sounds like what would happen if you moved the source UP and DOWN instead of FRONT to BACK. Failing that, I think I've read similar posts like this before, Perhaps check the archives?
