[Openal] No devices on Ubuntu

I am trying to capture sound using OpenAL, but there is something wrong with
my setup. When calling
alcGetString (NULL, ALC_CAPTURE_DEVICE_SPECIFIER);
an empty string is returned. The same happens if I call
alcGetString (NULL, ALC_DEVICE_SPECIFIER);

However, I am able to both record and playback sound with the Sound Recorder
bundled with Ubuntu.

What should I check/look for?

Ubuntu is running within vmware, but that shouldn't affect this as long as
Sound Recorder is working
as normal?
