Yes, normal audio works without any quirks.

I know. I tried them explicitly one by one just to be sure there's no weird
bug in e.g. DS3D initialization that would make trying to open MMSYSTEM fail
as well.

Yes.
Also, there no other sound devices in the Control Panel to be selected as
the "preferred" sound device. So the SigmaTel is really the only option.
I'll try a few OpenAL sample programs and perhaps a few DirectSound3D
samples, if I can find any (any pointers? :).
But do you think it would be worthwhile to try to isolate further where
inside OpenAL the initialization it fails?
