[Openal] AL_CONE* problems

Using the latest CVS of AL (and a number of snapshots over the last 3
months) I seem to be hitting a problem with the cone system.
Using the Linux version, i have a directional sound, defined with the
alSourcef (source, AL_CONE_INNER_ANGLE, 60.0 );
alSourcef (source, AL_CONE_OUTER_ANGLE, 180.0 );
alSource3f (source, AL_DIRECTION, 0.0,0.0,0.0 );
alSourcef (source, AL_CONE_OUTER_GAIN, 0.1 );
Then I take the source and rotate it
alSource3f (source, AL_DIRECTION, dirx,diry,dirz );
What I find is that there is NO gradual attenuation between the inner
and outer cone, but a set of changes that happen at 90, 150, 210 and 270
degrees (the angles of the inner and outer cones). The documentation
suggests I should hear a gradual attenuation from one to the other, but
I do not.
Am I missing something here?
