[Openal] Can't configure from CVS

Thank you to everybody for your help.
It turns out that on Mandriva 10.2 (the most recent until a few weeks
ago) the autoconf tools are 2.59 (the most recent) but automake is 1.4
(the latest is 1.9).
Upgrading automake to 1.9 still gave many warnings (as someone else
posted) but it generated a configure script.
checking alsa/asoundlib.h usability... yes
checking alsa/asoundlib.h presence... yes
checking for alsa/asoundlib.h... yes
checking for library containing snd_pcm_info_sizeof... -lasound
checking for ALSA support... static
ie. in config.log
But arch/arts/arts.c failed to compile
arch/arts/arts.c:20:19: artsc.h: No such file or directory
and arch/sdl/sdl.c failed to compile
arch/sdl/sdl.c:19:17: SDL.h: No such file or directory
The only way I could solve this was to install arts and sdl
and, because it still didn't find the headers, to copy them to
include/ (I thought the README said SDL was not needed...)
Now I think I've got the library built but the test programs won't
build. Besides there's no "make test", they all try to #include
"AL/alut.h" which does not exist in the portable source tree.
(I thought portable was sufficient?) I checked out the whole openal
tree and tried to configure alut but just got
"configure: error: cannot find sources (AUTHORS) in . or .."
and, after touching AUTHORS,
"./configure: line 3178: ALUT_C__ATTRIBUTE__: command not found"
I'm sorry to report so many problems, maybe I'm not trying hard enough!
Just out of interest, am I the only user having problems, or am I
simply the only user?!
