I'm sure you're not the only one with this impression, which is why I 
decided to say something.  I just want to make sure the people involved 
get the credit they deserve.

The proprietary implementations are motivated by business interest, so 
they're naturally going to tend to be better.  The Linux implementations 
aren't going to be as good until there's more interest in them.  Of 
course, you then get into a chicken and egg situation, in that not many 
people are going to take an interest in OpenAL on Linux (or other 
platforms) until there's a decent enough implementation to start with.  
Recently, Chris has provided the "egg" in question and we've already 
seen traffic on this list pick up significantly because of it.
