First of all I'd like say a big thanks to Chris Robinson for this
implementation. I've been strugling a lot with old openal linux version.
Both, 0.0.8 and various cvs revisions. I've found one particular
revision that was using new alsa API (0.0.8 still uses 0.9) and worked
pretty well but that didn't solve all my problems. In general I've been
very worried about OpenAL state under Linux as its still the only choice
for games with 3d sound and its being used as such.
Your implementation solved many problems with sound quality I've been
experiencing. Mostly statics caused either by high CPU load or just some
statics that were always present. Your version got rid of all of them
(probably by mmap).
Anyway as this version gave me some hope for good quality sound I have
few questions about it.
Are you and in what aspect at the current state of developing interested
in bug reports? As I'm not very into sound programming I can only
provide some very general problems I've run into, but can provide
everything thats necessary to reproduce them.
1. Totally no sound in one old icculus port of a windows game.
2. Only front speakers playing on other game where on old OpenAL rear
were playing as well (I'm 99% sure rear were just a copy of front ones,
but still, sound was present).
I dont know if that matters but there is no alext.h in your source package.
Also it would be nice to make static version as well during compilation.
And by all means, please, don't stop developing it. Its really sad to
see that the library that was made for Linux is in such a bad shape (in
many cases barely usable) while Creative and Apple happily took it over
and closed its development.
Thanks again...
