Could you try http://aedion.de/openal/freealut-1.0.0.tar.gz from my 
http://aedion.de/openal/ website, please? Just "./configure && make", not 
"./autogen.sh".

That's OK, it is a very recent version.

That's an ancient version, which very probably does not work well with the 
autoconf mentioned above. Current versions are 1.9.x. Is this really what is 
shipped currently on Macs??

Never heard of that version. Perhaps a result of Apple's "Let's do things 
differently"-attitude... :-)

Again a bit old, but it might work with the rest. Is there no libtool / 
libtoolize (without the "g") in the search path? If this is the case, then 
Apple should have hacked autoconf accordingly to look for glibtool / 
glibtoolize instead.

Can you build other autoconf/automake/libtool-based projects right from CVS on 
your box?
